Our Legacy

 Past

The legacy we have come to cherish, celebrate, and embody today. Began around the end of the nineteenth century, when Jack Walker met and married Dora Owens. They had ten children Mattie Lee, Ida, Emma, Clarence, Annie, Florence, Daisy, Carrie, Jessie, and Jimmie, from whom we are descendants.

At that point, the legacy that we hold dear started to take on meaning: Faith, the love for Family, and the Spirit of Jabez. Jack knew from the very beginning that he had the spirit of Jabez. For those who do not know the story of Jabez, it is found in 1st Chronicles 4:10. Before Jabez’ prayer, all of Jabez’ ancestors before him accepted the status quo. However, Jabez’ prayer to God was for God to enlarge his territory. Because of his faith and charging God with his own words, his prayer was granted.

As some of you become more familiar with our grandfather, you will agree that he could not accept the status quo of his era, which was being a sharecropper, renter, borrower, and that of not a lender, a landowner, or entrepreneur. Because of legacy he wanted to instill in his descendants, he became one the largest landowners in Walthall County, MS of his time. I am not just referring to an African Americans, but of any ethnic group. This in itself would have been a great story and legacy. If he was only concerned with the era in which, he was living in. He was not just satisfied with being one of largest landowners of his time. He knew that to leave a legacy that would have a profound impact on his descendants, and inspire his children and the generations to follow them. This led him to becoming a very successful entrepreneur owning, and operating a successful logging company. He accomplished all this while pursuing his first love, which was spreading the gospel. His deep-rooted love for God, unwavering faith, and passion for lost souls. Motivated him to be instrumental in establishing several Church of God in Christ churches throughout southeast Mississippi, and Louisiana. In fulfilling the called on his life, his travels led him to Memphis TN, where he met, and fellowship with Bishop Charles H Mason founder of The Church of God in Christ.

Present

Although, our ancestors may not left untold material wealth for the generation after them. They instilled and entrusted us with a proven legacy that had been tested and continue to be tested until this day. For this reason, we may have liked to have had material wealth bequeathed us, however, what was left has proven to be more precious than anything. Because of our legacy, is based on three indelible values Faith, Love for Family, and a Jabez Spirit. Our Legacy is likened to a triangle, Faith and Love for Family are the vertex or the foundation that everything stands on, and our Jabez Spirit represents the Apex. Faith in God has been and continues to be our cornerstone today. This family fully understands that it is essential to put God first in everything we do. To do otherwise is not an option, to quote from Philippians 4:13- “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.”

Love for Family- When one of us has had to face tragedies in the past or those we may have to experience in the future. Miles and geographical locations may separate some of us, however our love, bond, and support for family has never or will ever, allow these challenges or any others to become obstacles for not showing up in time of adversities, to ensure that not one of us will ever have to face them alone. Because this is woven throughout our DNA, I seen have this family rally around family members who were experiencing difficult moments not out of obligation, but out of love for family. To put in plain English “We are Family”. Because, of that I have come to realize I am fortunate and truly blessed to be a part of an awesome family.

Because, of the Jabez Spirit this family is embodied with dreamers. Because, we are dreamers this has resulted in many of our family members breaking barriers, and destroying generational curses. In pursuit of their dreams this has led to countless family members obtaining degrees of higher education including PHD's, medical profession, IT, highly skilled tradesmen, finance, becoming thriving entrepreneurs, and even a filmmaker just to name a few. This family has shown its patriotism by those who served and those that are currently serving in the Armed Forces.  While others have gladly answered the call of God on their lives to carry forth the gospel of Christ as well.

DNA links all of us together, but it is our Love for family that binds us for an eternity. Whether by blood or love we are family it’s ironclad, no refunds given. Therefore, the answer is no don’t bother to ask. We may have our share of drama and chaos now and then, it only makes the Love rise, the laughter flow, and build memories that last forever.  We got a little bit of this and a little bit of that; that’s what it takes to make an uniquely awesome family that happens to be called The Walker Family.

Future

We have been entrusted to make sure that Our Family Legacy not only survives our generation, but those generations to come. To ensure this happens it is imperative that we as caretakers take the time to instill in our children, as our forefathers took the time to instill in us what it means to be a descendant of such an amazing family. By doing so it will inspire more dreamers to pursue their dreams, one day this may lead to one of them becoming President of United States of America.
